The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia denounced this Monday that the second round of the presidential elections in Moldova this Sunday have been the electoral process most “undemocratic” in the history of the country. In it, President Maia Sandu has achieved re-election with 55.33% of the votes against the pro-Russian candidate Alexandr Stoianoglo.
Russian diplomacy has denounced in a statement that in this electoral process there has been an “unprecedented repression” against the opposition and independent media, especially Russian-speaking ones. They accuse “open interference” by Western countries in the process and a “large-scale use” of administrative resources by the authorities.
Likewise, Moscow has denounced an “official discrimination” by Chisinau against Moldovan voters residing in Russia, since in the Eurasian country two polling stations were installed for half a million Moldovans, while in the rest of “Western Europe and North America”, where half a million Moldovans also live, they installed “more than 200 polling stations.”
Russia justifies its criticism precisely on the official results of the elections, which show that Sandu has achieved victory thanks to the vote of “the Moldovan diaspora living in Western countries.” For Moscow, the population residing in Moldova “has approved a motion of no confidence in the current president” and his policies.
For Moscow, voters in Moldovan territory have confirmed their rejection of the “dismantling of the Moldovan national identity and the neutral status enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic.” According to Russia, Moldovans actually advocate preserving “the centuries-old links” with your country, that throughout history “has been and will be a reliable link and friend of the Moldovan people.”
“The results of the second round of the presidential elections confirmed the presence of a deep division in Moldovan society, which emerged during the first round and the referendum on EU membership. This polarization was caused by the short-sighted policies of the country’s leaders. and the serious interference of Western countries,” the text adds.
“Violation and falsification”
“Experts and political scientists point out numerous violations and falsifications by the authorities. They draw attention to the opaque organization of voting by mailwhich opens up possibilities of fraud,” added Russian diplomacy, which assures that during the elections there were “widespread and obvious” “violations” of the process.
In fact, it considers that the situation is such that not even the observation mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), to which accuses of being “known for its bias”, has been able to turn a “blind eye”. Likewise, they have denounced the ban on entry to Moldova of three Russian observers of this mission.
Finally, Russian diplomacy has called on Moldovan leaders “not to deepen the division in society or follow the example of Western creditors, but to take the path of respect for interests of the majority of its own citizens who live in Moldova and not in Western countries.
