The Russian government criticized on Wednesday (28) accusations that the country could be behind the damage detected in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, which caused leaks in the Baltic Sea.
“This was quite predictable. It’s idiotic and absurd,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a daily news conference. One of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s right-hand men, Peskov, assured that Moscow would insist on participating in the investigation into the incident. According to him, the damage to the gas pipelines is a big problem for Russia.
“Both branches of Nord Stream 2 are full of gas, the systems are ready to pump, and this gas is very expensive,” said Peskov. The spokesman recalled that Russia had decided to use half of the gas in this pipeline to cover its own needs after being blocked by Germany even before the invasion of Ukraine.
“It is a very expensive gas and now it is lost in the air,” lamented the Kremlin representative.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexandr Grushko said the country was ready to study requests for a joint investigation with European countries.
“If there are requests (from these countries), we will consider them. As far as I know, there have been none,” Chancellor No. 2 said, according to local news agency TASS.
The presidential spokesperson said that, in the current situation, “dialogue and rapid interaction of all parties is necessary to elucidate as quickly as possible what happened, assess the damage and establish actions to correct this situation.”
Peskov recalled that in February of this year, US President Joe Biden stated that “there would be no Nord Stream 2”.
“We don’t know what he was referring to,” said Peskov, who added, assuring that American companies that export liquefied gas are the biggest beneficiaries of the situation.
Yesterday, the governments of Denmark and Sweden pointed out that an “intentional act” would have been the probable cause of the leaks in the two pipelines.
The conclusions of the authorities of the two countries are based on data obtained by the respective national seismological services, which detected explosions near the places where the gas leaked.
