The second day of pre-season testing at Montmeló saw the presence of both drivers of the Mercedes on the track, exactly as happened in yesterday’s session. The reigning world champion team, after having participated with Lewis Hamilton at the wheel of the W13 during the morning, then continued the rest of the program with the new purchase George Russell, author of 65 laps. The former Williams driver completed the day in the top 5 of the overall standings, finishing at 4th place 8 tenths of a second behind Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari, with the Monegasque being the fastest ever. Thanks to a time of 1: 20.537, signed with a medium tire, the 24-year-old overtook the second Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, suffering a delay of about three tenths of Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren.
However, as the same number 63 remarked in the statements released to the press, the main element is not the search for the fastest lap, but that of analyzing the behavior of the new cars: “We are seeing some interesting things in these days of testing and that’s what shooting now is for. Some teams seem pretty fast. One red team and one orange team in particular appear very competitive“says the former Williams with a smile on his face, obviously referring to Ferrari And McLaren. “Let’s see what happens tomorrow and what we will be able to do between this test and Bahrain. In any case – he added – I was sure we wouldn’t have finished the day in front of everyone. The teams seem to have everything under control and appear quite strong, both low and fuel efficient, as well as with tire handling. We all know that we are working on different programs but, from the average of all the different runs, we are behind them at the moment. Let’s wait and see. The championship is not won in Barcelona in the winter tests, but they have been two equally intriguing days so far ”.
