The smaller one SAV BMW has to leave the field if it is up to rumours, but then again not.
We can position BMW as the brand that fills niches and makes them popular. So the brand started with the X5 and from there a true SUV and crossover empire was built. The smaller X3 came a little later and from the X6 it became a matter of filling niches. Because if the X6 is a coupé version of the X5, then you can quite easily make the same coupé of the X3, but a class lower. Thus the X4 was born.
BMW X4
It can be that simple. The BMW X4 debuted in 2013 as a sister model to the second generation BMW X3 (F25/F26). It’s essentially the same car, but with a sloping roofline. It was actually seen. In any case, enough to release another X4 for the next generation.
The BMW X4 (G02) is more of the same: the same basis as a BMW X3, but as a coupé. Nice with this generation, which entered the scene in 2018: there was now also a thoroughbred X4 M. The result of an M3 powertrain in an SUV. A nice mid-range SUV, were it not for the fact that the X3 is rationally a better choice.
BMW X4 off the road?
Well, the BMW X4 has been around for almost ten years and two generations. The car has recently been facelifted to last a little longer. After that, it seems ready for the BMW X4. According to an insider on Bimmerpost there are sounds that there will be no new BMW X4. That while a petrol version and an iX3 (NA5) are planned for the upcoming generation BMW X3 (G45). Even the X3 M (G97) would return!
coupe
But a BMW X4 (G46) or X4 M (G98) seems uncertain for the future. According to BMW, the potential market is too small for this model to return. That while coupe SUVs are now hotter than ever. In fact, almost every electric SUV from rivals is also available as a coupé. Just think of the Tesla Model Y, Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback, Volkswagen ID.5 GTX and much more. There is also logic behind this: the sloping roofline provides a better streamline and thus provides a few extra kilometers of range.
iX4
BMW does think of this and that is why the X4 is not necessarily completely finished. There is in fact a BMW iX4 (NA7) on the schedule. A fully electric variant of the X4 that probably shares most of its components with the iX3. The entire X3 and X4 family is slated for 2024, with the iX4 debuting in 2026. Take it with a grain of salt, but the X4 looks set to have a relatively short lifespan.
