According to the ruler Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus wants to fly the migrants stuck on the border with Poland back to their home countries.
Minsk – “We are actively working to convince people: Please return home,” he said on Monday in the capital Minsk, according to the state agency Belta. «Nobody wants to return. The people are very stubborn. ” Belarus is ready to fly people home with its own airline Belavia.
For a week now, thousands of migrants have been waiting for help in the cold in the border area between Poland and Belarus. Lukashenko is accused of bringing refugees from crisis regions to the EU’s external border in an organized manner. It is believed that he is trying to take revenge for the sanctions that the EU has imposed for suppressing civil society and the democratic opposition in Belarus.
The foreign ministers of the EU countries wanted to discuss new sanctions on Monday because of the migration crisis. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Minsk once again denied that Belavia was involved in the transport of migrants. Lukashenko threatened countermeasures if new sanctions were passed. “We will fight back,” said the ruler, without giving any details. Because of the large number of migrants, tensions loomed in his country as well. That must be prevented. (dpa)
