A 770km motorcycle expedition to the South Pole is what two riders hope to accomplish in 39 days with their purpose-built Royal Enfield Himalayans. Heated handles do not seem a superfluous luxury to us…
Royal Enfield wants to celebrate its 120th anniversary with ’90° South – Quest for the Pole’. It is no surprise that Enfield is undertaking such an expedition. Remarkable journeys have been made with Enfields from the very beginning of the brand. With this rather ambitious expedition to the South Pole, Enfield wants to explore and push the boundaries of motorcycle possibilities.
The trip should pay tribute to pure motorcycling, as well as “to the courage and resilience of countless motorcyclists and explorers who have made history with their motorcycle journeys,” said Enfield. It is clear that the expedition is a tough test of endurance and perseverance for both man and machine.
The drivers are Santhosh Vijay Kumar (Group Manager Marketing at Royal Enfield) and Dean Coxson (Senior Engineer Product Development at Royal Enfield). The pair will attempt to reach the geographic South Pole from the Ross Ice Shelf, via Leverett Glacier to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.
For this expedition, two Himalayans were modified in-house, with functional upgrades to enable navigation through snow and ice and to function under extreme conditions in Antarctica. The engines were tested on the Langjokull Glacier in Iceland. The expedition is carried out in close cooperation with Arctic Trucks, which has supported several scientific, commercial and NGO expeditions in the Antarctic Plateau in the past.
