German-Russian cooperation in space has been successful for many years. The partnership has now been terminated.
Moscow – Russia has declared its cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to be over, in response to Germany’s termination of the cooperation.
DLR’s decision has irreparably damaged long-term relations, significantly affecting peaceful space exploration activities. This emerges from a letter published in Moscow on Thursday by the head of the Roskosmos space agency, Dmitry Rogozin.
It says: “In this regard, I consider further cooperation (…) impossible to carry out joint experiments on the International Space Station.” Experiments to develop a ground-space system for monitoring and forecasting natural disasters are also affected. A spokesman for DLR in Cologne said when asked by dpa about Rogozin’s statements: “We take note of the reaction of the Russian side, but do not want to comment further.”
DLR announced on Wednesday evening that it was ending ongoing cooperation with Russia because of the attack on Ukraine. When asked, however, a DLR spokesman said that the International Space Station ISS was not affected. The European Space Agency Esa and the US space agency Nasa are responsible for this. dpa
