A record edition of the Foro Italico tournament is announced (from 8 to 21 May), which passes 54 to 96 male and female athletes in the competition, with a duration that rises from 8 to 12 days. And a bridge appears at the Forum…
Here they are, the Italian tennis internationals of the “upgrade” edition, that of the passage from 54 to 96 players, from 8 to 12 days in duration, an “historic goal that we have been pursuing for a long time”, says Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation.
PARITY
—
But another significant turning point was also announced: the parity within three years between the women’s and men’s prize money, 8 million and 300 thousand euros, greeted with enthusiasm by Elena Goitini, managing director of BNL who renewed “at least” for another six years the historic relationship with the Roman tournament. This afternoon the event experienced a first presentation, an opportunity to see the two extra courts on the Lungotevere side with 300 seats in the stands which will bring the number of rectangles available to tennis players to 17. But from 8 to 21 May there will also be the baptism of the pedestrian bridge that will bring the various Sinners, Berrettinis, Alcaraz, Trevisan or Swiatek from the Central to the new area entirely dedicated to the players, the one near the swimming stadium. As for the possibility of giving the finalists a day more breathing space with the semifinals on Friday instead of Saturday, Binaghi said he was skeptical: not for now, but the choice is not definitive.
WHAT FIGURES
—
The numbers are staggering more than a month after the event. “We want to shatter the record of 235,000 spectators and break through the 300,000 threshold,” says Binaghi again. Advance sales already mark a 51 percent increase compared to a year ago and of the 110,000 tickets, no less than 24 percent were sold abroad. For Alessandro Onorato, councilor for Sport, Fashion, Tourism and Major Events of Rome Capital, “the city will be involved in the party, we will have sleepless nights for commercial activities during the tournament. It is no longer the time of the autonomous republic of the Foro Italico. ..”. Vito Cozzoli, CEO of Sport and Health, a travel companion of Fitp and landlord at the Foro Italico, also spoke of the young village which will bring 40,000 children and teenagers to play during the Internationals: “It will be a bigger, more sustainable, more beautiful, greener”.
