Rome – A complicated start, fifty minutes of suffering, but then Jannik Sinner lives up to expectations and flies into the quarter-finals of Roland Garros. The number 2 in the world ranking suffered at the start against the French left-handed Corentin Moutet mainly due to his own demerits. Many, too many errors for the blue, while the public drags the home favourite, the last transalpine representative in the men’s singles, to an incredible 5-0. Then another match begins, the one awaited due to the very different values between the two protagonists on the pitch. Moutet manages to close the first set 6-2 and even wins the opening break in the second set, but the match has already changed.
Sinner slowly finds his certainties again, starting with the serve, he raises the pace and neutralizes the opponent’s variations in play. The match passes without any more problems for the South Tyrolean: 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-1 the final score in 2 hours and 40 minutes of play for the number 2 ATP. Sinner will return to the field on Tuesday to win a place in the semi-final against the Bulgarian Dimitrov, defeated in the recent final in Miami and more generally in three of the four direct matches, with the only misstep for the then very young South Tyrolean in 2020 on the clay of Rome.
“It was really difficult, Moutet played very well in the first set, he has a different tennis style and is left-handed. I am satisfied with this victory,” said Sinner at the end of the match.
Matteo Arnaldi’s run comes to a halt in the round of 16. The tennis player from Sanremo, after surprisingly eliminating Andrey Rublev, is unable to replicate the feat against number 9 ATP Stefanos Tsitsipas despite a very high level start. Ahead 6-3 5-3, Arnaldi doesn’t take advantage of 4 set points, gives up the tie-break and then gets lost, coming out defeated 3-6 7-6(4) 6-2 6-2. On Tuesday the Greek will also try to stop number 3 Carlos Alcaraz, capable of sending a strong signal to Sinner and the rest of his opponents by eliminating the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets with a clear and peremptory 6-3 6-3 6-1 .
In the women’s field, Elisabetta Cocciaretto leaves the scene, clearly defeated 6-1 6-2 by the American Cori Gauff. “Today was very difficult, she is a great opponent but I didn’t do what I should have. I felt a bit empty and the worst thing isn’t so much the defeat, but the fact that I didn’t try to do anything differently on the court I made mistakes right away, from the first game, I was too negative and I didn’t enjoy the moment”, admitted the tennis player from Fermo. In the next round Gauff will face Tunisian Ons Jabeur, victorious 6-4 6-4 against Danish Tauson. Everything was easy also for the world number one Iga Swiatek, who took another step towards her fourth success at Roland Garros by overwhelming the Russian Potapova with a double 6-0 in just 40 minutes. In the quarterfinals she will find the Czech Vondrousova, winner 6-4 6-2 over the Serbian Danilovic.
