After the game, Schmidt did not want to go too far with the statement that what was on offer from the Eindhoven side was very poor. ,,Everyone thinks in advance that we will continue for a while, but it is not all that easy in this schedule. It’s about getting through and we succeeded. Maccabi played a very passionate game and we were able to go along with that to a certain extent. It remained exciting until the final phase and after the 1-1 I was not so sure whether we would continue.”
The PSV trainer thought Mauro Júnior was the best player on the field. ,,When I look at what he has brought, in a place where he is normally not at all. I am very happy with that. Do it all and he is very important to our team right now. I am also proud of my other players. No, it wasn’t our best game and we can get to a higher level, but in the end we are through.”
The result was achieved without Joey Veerman and that was surprising to say the least. De Volendammer was PSV’s star last weekend. ,,I thought we would still need him in the course of the game, but it turned out differently. I left Érick Gutiérrez and Ibrahim Sangaré, also because I thought we needed them in the standard situations.”
