ALEXANDRIA. In the city it is the day of march to say “no” to nuclear waste storage in the province, where Sogin has identified five sites suitable to welcome them. Two thousand people are marching from Viale della Repubblica, through the center of the city, to reach Piazza Libertà, after 17 preparatory meetings which were held in various towns in the Alessandria area. Citizens, committees, mayors and associations parade.
Among them, also well-known personalities. Football legend Roberto Bettega, who has a home in Vignale, didn't want to miss out: «I have listened to some experts on this issue, I want the right choice to be made. But I would like to understand first what this choice will cause. As citizens we did not have the necessary explanations. When I played I studied the matches first, not at the ninetieth minute otherwise we would have lost them all.”

Ornella Muti is also expected with her daughter Naike Rivelli. The singer Ornella Vanoni was also present who alongside the mayors wanted to reiterate: «I want to defend this land because I like it. You are right to fight. We must eliminate everything that harms the territory.”
In Piazza Libertà, at 4.30 pm, the interventions of the institutions, in the lead was the mayor of Castelletto Monferrato, Gianluca Colletti, who led the protest: «The people who are here today want to live, without letting their problems slide on their shoulders, mortgaging their future and that of their children. The deposit must be made but not in the wrong place. The Alessandria area is already facing the drama of the asbestos of Casale, the reclamation of Acna and Ecolibarna, it is with difficulty containing the environmental consequences of many chemical industries, we must say “enough” to other installations of this type, also in the interest of future generations. We cannot imagine a 150 hectare facility, like 207 football fields, on our territory which hosts aquifers capable of quenching the thirst of thousands of people for centuries.”
The president of the Province Enrico Bussalino added: «Today we gave a great demonstration of unity and demonstrated that the territory does not want this deposit in any way. This square is a spectacle, let's not give up.”
Giorgio Abonante, mayor of Alessandria: «The capital municipality is that of all the citizens of this wonderful province. We must have the clarity to support the State's work to find suitable sites to host this repository, because the nuclear waste is there and the problem must be solved: our area is not good. We must forcefully ask for a law against the dispersion of chemical substances and a consortium for land reclamation, we have 100 sites to be reclaimed in our area.”
From a distance, the support of governor Alberto Cirio also arrived.
