Unfortunately Rob Halecreator of Waves And Waves 2alias Squid In A Box, died earlier this month after battling cancer. As part of his last wish, the developer’s games were made available for free on Steam.
In a post on the Waves 2 Steam forum, Rob Hale’s partner CJ announced Hale’s death. He also revealed that part of Hale’s ultimate wishes was to make the games free for everyone to enjoy: “This was something Rob was considering for the past couple of months anyway when his health took a hit … I hope this can be seen as a parting gift to everyone out there who hasn’t played any of these games yet.“.
Waves launched in 2011 and marked Hale’s first big game. For those unfamiliar with it, this is an arcade-style twin-stick shooter where players must destroy the bugs, errors and viruses that threaten to kill their system. Waves has become a popular choice in the indie scene, largely thanks to its gameplay and accompanying soundtrack.
Unfortunately, Hale died before Waves 2: Notorious’s successor could be completed. As CJ writes in the announcement, Hale “was always dreaming big and trying to make the best game possible.” The sequel was supposed to be a “hellish twin-stick shooter” in which players take control of a “runner” who dives into cyberspace to battle corporate networks.
CJ ends his letter like this: “I hope all of you out there, whoever you are and how Rob’s games have reached you, can hold a special place in your heart for Waves … but most of all I hope you can continue to feel the passion and love that Rob has. poured into these games“.
