The new corona wave is swelling. In the past week, 19,031 positive tests were registered, the highest number since the beginning of August. In a week, the number of positive tests increased by 55 percent. In addition, more and more people are hospitalized because of their corona infection.
The autumn wave has now really started, notes the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). That advises people to test themselves in case of complaints, to stay at home if the test is positive, and to get the repeat shot.
More than 323,000 prick appointments are planned for this week. The GGD says it has room for 700,000 injections per week. The crowds differ per location, says a spokesperson. “We see that people also plan appointments weeks in advance. They take more time.” Up to last Wednesday, more than 261,000 shots had been taken.
The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) hopes that as many people as possible will get the repeat shot. “We do not express any further expectations of how many repeat shots we hope to take,” a spokesperson responds. For the time being, the ministry sticks to the predetermined injection order. Anyone born in or before 1955 can make an appointment. and healthcare workers with direct patient contact are invited, the younger people who are also eligible for a flu shot will follow, after which the injection locations will open for all people aged 12 and older.
Hospitals
The number of admissions of corona patients is increasing in hospitals. At the moment, 840 patients are in the nursing wards and 33 in the IC. RIVM actually sees more admissions due to corona. The institute takes into account that the autumn wave has started.
Last week, 485 people were hospitalized because of their corona infection. In 26 of them, the complaints were so bad that they ended up in intensive care because of corona. For both groups, these are the highest numbers since the end of July. In the nursing wards, the total number of new admissions of people who tested positive increased by 68 percent. This also includes people who were not admitted for their infection, but who had another ailment. And although the number of patients who ended up in IC with corona is low, that number has more than doubled.
More and more people are also getting tested. The GGD locations carried out 23,048 corona tests last week. This is also the highest number since the end of June. Compared to the week before, the number of tests increased by 47 percent. The number of positive tests among residents of nursing homes increased by 47 percent.
transfer
The first talks about the spread of corona patients have already been held. Hospitals are currently still taking care of the corona patients themselves, but it seems that transfers will soon follow.
According to Leon van den Toorn, chairman of the Dutch Association of Physicians for Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis (NVALT), hospitals are closely monitoring the corona situation, but the admissions are not yet weighing on the occupation. “Now we just have to pay attention to how this continues.” The people who end up in hospitals with corona are often elderly or patients with underlying complaints.
Hospitals try to assess as accurately as possible for which patients admission is really necessary. They also allow people to move on to a nursing home or a nursing home as soon as they are stable. In this way, the hospitals hope to keep the pressure under control.
