Governor called the flood the biggest catastrophe in the country’s history and said that the number of deaths is likely to increase
The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), said this Sunday (May 5, 2024) that the State must face a collapse in services after what he called “Greatest catastrophe in the country’s history”. Leite made the statements during a press conference with the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and his entourage.
Leite stated that the trend is for the number of deaths to increase. Until now the Civil defense counts 75 people dead and 103 missing. Heavy rains hit 334 of the 476 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul. “It’s a post-war scenario”he said.
The governor presented the damage survey to President Lula and said that the reconstruction plan will need help from the federal government because the financial situation of Rio Grande do Sul is not good. “The machine [pública] is suffocated from a fiscal point of view”he declared.
The minister Waldez Góes (Regional Development) said that “the entire water system is compromised. The presidents of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), from the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL) and the TCU (Federal Audit Court), Bruno Dantas.
