The Grande Raccordo Anulare of Rome is closed to traffic due to an exercise simulating an emergency in “Selva Candida” gallery, on the external roadway. To allow the operations to be carried out, the road is temporarily closed to traffic on the external carriageway and diverted onto the roadway internal via bypass.
Ring road closed to traffic, when?
The Grande Raccordo Anulare is temporarily closed on the night of April 4, 2024from 10.30 pm until the operations are completed, al 7,000 kmexclusively on external roadwayin the area of Rome north-westto allow an exercise to be carried out within the “Selva Candida” gallery. The exercise is planned in compliance with Legislative Decree 264/06, which regulates the safety of the tunnels of the TEN network.
These are real tests of emergency situations, with simulation of a tunnel accident with the start of a fire and the involvement of buses, cars and injured people. Anas personnel, firefighters, law enforcement, the 118 health service and coordination of the Prefecture of Rome participate in the operations.
Traffic diverted onto the internal road
The Grande Raccordo Anulare of Rome is not completely closed on April 4th from 10.30pm, but only a short section. The cars that are in the closed section at the height of the “Selva Candida” gallery are diverted onto the internal roadway, following common practice on motorways during road works or maintenance interventions.

Simulated accident on the ring road
The simulated exercise is carried out as if it were a real accident on the ring roadwith the activation of the fire brigade teams and the 118 health emergency service. The fire is expected to be put out and the tunnel made safe, including the possible evacuation of the people present in the tunnel. After that, they will come removed the vehicles involved in the accident and traffic will be restored. An event is scheduled in the days following the exercise debriefing to jointly evaluate the result of the actions taken, in order to analyze the event e optimize any future procedures.
