Richard Hammond, little big man of Top Gear and Grand Tour fame, claims the combustion engine never did any damage.
The Grand Tour is unfortunately coming to an end, but Richard Hammond continues with cars. The presenter of the most legendary programs for the petrolhead still does things on the internet. But The Hamster's real passion is classic cars and their restoration. He now also does this himself with his company The Smallest Cog. A name that is of course a juvenile double entendre, which sociable people can appreciate.
But yes, that old stuff…Is there actually a future for it? Coach spoke to the somewhat vertically limited gin and tonic aficionado to hear his take on it. And Richard has some interesting reflections on that. Nowadays everything is often divided into boxes and camps on the altar of inclusion. But Hammond sees things broadly and thinks that we will need all kinds of transport in the future. Whether it runs on hydrogen, electricity or (synthetic) fuel:
We've got to welcome the future. Things are going to have to change, and it'll be engineering that saves us. We have to be open to a variety of solutions – repurposing cars we've already built, embracing hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen combustion and making a success of hybrids, as well as building and selling lots of electric cars.
Richard Hammond, is truly inclusive
So yes, EVs should be there too. But Hammond is realistic and also sees the disadvantages and practical impossibilities of batteries. So he comes up with a nice idea about the combustion engine:
There isn't enough lithium in the world for all future cars to be battery-electric. The combustion engine never damaged anything. It's the fuel. If that can be made sustainably and to scale – and the signs that it can be better than even a year ago – then a decent slice of the world's 1.4 billion cars can stay on the road, and blocks like me can restore them.
Richard Hammond, thinks the combustion engine is great
The argument is somewhat reminiscent of Jeremy Clarkson's famous statement. The renowned farmer once said that no one has ever died from speed, just from suddenly losing all that speed. A small but crucial difference. If you slow down in an orderly manner, speed is no problem. And if you burn some clean fuel with your big V8, neither.
So now we just have to make that clean fuel available at a reasonable price. We can then continue scrubbing. Whose deed.
