This weekend the PSOE has left another indication that Teresa Ribera will be, in the absence of her formal nomination, the candidate of the main government party in the European elections on June 9. The militant assemblies of Madrid, the federation to which she belongs, this Saturday “massively” supported the third vice president of the Government and Minister of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, according to sources from the regional leadership led by Juan Lobato. Ribera, affiliated with Majadahonda, received the most votes in the 123 PSOE groups in Madrid, which expressly requested the vote for the number four of the Executive. “Everyone everywhere has voted for Ribera,” summarizes the leadership of the Madrid socialists.
The forecast is that Pedro Sánchez will announce this Monday, at the meeting of the federal executive in which the result of the Basque elections will be analyzed, that Ribera will be the headliner chosen for the European Parliament elections. The president of the Government and general secretary of the PSOE will wait until the electoral process has concluded in Euskadi, where the socialists aspire to grow and be the key to the government, re-editing the coalition with the PNV that began in 2016.
Ferraz has insisted in recent days that the procedures had to be respected and await the proposals of the territories, and that is what makes the support that the third vice president has achieved in Madrid so important. The degree of approval that Ribera has received reinforces his election at the head of the European lists in a federation that is always associated with the general secretary – the president of the Government also militates for the PSOE of Madrid – and that, therefore, is taken for granted that should be proposed to the person leading the candidacy.
Another important factor is the closing of ranks of the leadership of the Madrid socialists with Ribera. The Secretary of Organization of the federation, Marta Bernardo, sent an email on Thursday at noon to the general secretaries and organizational secretaries of the groups with the third vice president's proposal. “Comrade, colleague, this Saturday, April 20, the extraordinary assembly will be held in each of the PSOE-Madrid groups to propose candidates for the European Parliament list,” the letter began. “As a show of support for our colleague, vice president of the Government of Spain, Teresa Ribera Rodríguez, who has always shown great commitment to the PSOE of Madrid, the federation to which she belongs, I propose her inclusion in the vote that will take place in the assembly on April 20 in your group,” he stated in the circular to which EL PAÍS has had access.
Voting for candidates on the lists is not exclusive, that is, a militant can support several candidates, but the gesture of the Madrid federation is symptomatic. Especially when the PSOE federation groups in other communities have generally voted for other candidates to be part of the list. The sources consulted in Ferraz maintain that there will be few changes to the current list of MEPs. The federal committee, the highest body of the PSOE between congresses, will approve it on April 27. The day before, the federal list commission is scheduled to meet to close the candidacy. But all signs point to the fact that this Monday it will be known who will lead the candidacy. And all eyes are fixed on Ribera.
“Once the elections in Euskadi are over, we will concentrate on the Catalan elections and also on the European ones. And, therefore, you will already know who the candidate proposed by the PSOE is going to be,” Sánchez observed after the European Council on Thursday in Brussels. The president put Ribera at the same level as Josep Borrell, high representative of the EU and who was tested to repeat at the head of the lists, and Nadia Calviño, who left the Ministry of Economy in January to preside over the European Investment Bank , as an example of the Spanish contribution in Europe. Sánchez praised Ribera's “female leadership” and praised her as an “accredited, respected and valued woman at the European and multilateral level” in matters related “to climate policies, one of the main challenges facing humanity.” In less than 24 hours, the PSOE is expected to confirm its commitment to Ribera, which the party has taken for granted for days.
