Farmer Jan is still not doing well, his wife Rianne says in an interview with the Noordhollands Dagblad† At the beginning of this month it was announced that the farmer, who emigrated with his wife and their children from Texel to Denmark almost a year ago, has been affected by the muscle disease Guillain-Barré. He is still in the hospital.
“Jan is not doing well,” Rianne told a reporter for the newspaper. “It will be fine, that’s for sure. But we don’t know exactly how long that will take.” After the diagnosis of Guillain-Barré, a muscle disease that can develop within a day, the treatment did not work. According to Rianne, the intense initial phase of the disease takes about four weeks.
However, Jan has been in hospital for six weeks. “It differs from person to person. When he recovers, he can go to a rehabilitation center to learn to walk again. That also takes a few months. And when he comes home after that, he has to continue to recover. All in all, the healing process takes an average of one year.”
What is Guillain-Barre?
Guillain-Barré syndrome is a disorder of the nerves outside the central nervous system: the motor nerves that run from the spinal cord to the muscles and the sensory nerves that go from the skin, joints and muscles to the spinal cord. People with the syndrome, which can be caused by a harmless cold, often suffer from muscle weakness, paralysis and sensory disturbances such as numbness and tingling. The severity of the disease varies from mild symptoms to temporary complete paralysis, which can also paralyze respiratory and facial muscles. Most patients recover.
The farmer, known for Farmer seeks wife, had been in the rehabilitation center for a while, but still had to go back to the hospital. He still has trouble talking because he has little air. “That’s why he doesn’t call anymore, only with me in the evening.”
In the meantime, Rianne keeps the farm going and manages the six employees. Sons Melle (4) and Sem (3) go to daycare on weekdays. At the end of the day they make an evening round with their mother. Rianne, who has been in a relationship with Jan since 2015, takes care of the worries with love, “But I miss my dear husband and buddy very much,” Rianne sighs.”
