A woman has to pay 1155 euros for specialties on her Italian vacation. The family suspects a rip-off. But the story has an unexpected ending.
Munich – An 86-year-old woman and a family member from Milan wanted to try some local delicacies during their vacation on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia. But a street vendor on the beach in Porto Istana demanded an unbelievable price for the food.
Retailer demands horrendous price for specialties on Italian vacation
As the newspaper The Sera Corriere reported that the incident occurred at the end of August. The two Italian holidaymakers had decided to buy regional Pecorino cheese, some ham and sausage at a stall. The products are said to have weighed around four kilograms.
While the family member carried the purchases to the car, the woman – who is visually impaired – paid the bill with her card. Only after completing the transaction did the two of them notice the exorbitant price. When they wanted to confront the seller, however, he had already disappeared. A vacationer in Croatia also suspected a rip-off.
The holidaymakers reported the incident to the police with a copy of the receipt, which contained the name, company and address of the retailer. The family of the cheated holidaymaker also began to search for the seller themselves – and found him.
Rip-off on holiday in Italy? Story has a heartwarming ending
He claimed to the family that he had mentioned the price before buying. “It’s a free market, I don’t see any problem,” explained the man from Buddusò. He also dismissed concerns about the holidaymaker’s age and visual impairment: “You seemed to me to be completely clear-headed.” According to the newspaper The New – who had a photo of the receipt – the products would have cost only a fraction of the price in corresponding specialist shops.
But the story of the Italian holidaymaker took a heartwarming turn. Numerous shop owners and the mayor of Buddusò, Massimo Satta, collected 1,155 euros and reimbursed the 86-year-old for her horrendous costs. The tourist seemed so moved that she asked the mayor to donate the money to charity.
“Every country has its challenges, but it is important to remember that there are also many honest and hard-working people who make a positive contribution to the reputation of society,” quoted The New the mayor. He strongly condemned the dealer’s actions. It is not currently known whether he was prosecuted for this. Price traps and extra costs are also a threat in other holiday countries. (kas)
