Restaurants | “Cloud restaurant” Huuva unexpectedly opens a real restaurant

Huuva’s first brick-and-mortar restaurant is coming to Tikkurila. The company’s previously opened restaurants do not have seats for customers, but are pick-up points for food deliveries.

Cloud restaurant In September, Huuva will open its first brick-and-mortar restaurant, which will come to Tikkurila in Vantaa. Cloud restaurant means that Huuva prepares dishes from other restaurants only for home delivery – customers cannot visit the restaurant.

The brick-and-mortar location of the restaurant, which will open on Thursday, September 12, offers dishes from Boneless, Lie Mi, Sushibar+Wine, Naughty BRGR and Uuno Pinza.

“We try to keep the same pricing in the brick-and-mortar restaurant as in the restaurants’ own locations,” Huuva’s CEO Ville Leppälä tells.

The restaurant industry has had a lot of financial difficulties recently and several restaurants have filed for bankruptcy. However, Leppälä believes that Huuva’s brick-and-mortar restaurant will do well in the competition.

“It is true that times have not been easy for restaurants. However, we have developed technology that makes the restaurant’s loss lower. In addition, our ordering system is automated and the chefs do not have to do paperwork. This makes work more productive,” says Leppälä.

Before Since the opening of Tikkurila’s brick-and-mortar restaurant, Huuva has operated as a virtual restaurant. In a virtual restaurant, chefs prepare dishes from several different restaurants. The restaurant has no seats for customers, but serves as a pick-up point for Foodora and Wolt food deliveries.

Huuva currently has seven pick-up points in Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa.

The turnover of Huuva, founded in 2021, has grown strongly, but the operation has been loss-making. In the fiscal year ending in June 2023, Huuva’s turnover was 4.1 million euros, the operating loss was 3.5 million euros. According to unaudited figures for the fiscal year ending in June 2024, the company’s turnover was 6.0 million euros and the operating loss was 2.4 million euros.

“We have invested in growth by building technology. We continue to make strong growth investments, which puts a strain on the result. However, the relative profitability of the operation is constantly improving, because the kitchens themselves are profitable,” says Leppälä.

After Tikkurila, Huuva plans to open 15 new brick-and-mortar restaurants in the next year, the first of which will be the restaurants in Turku and Oulu that will open at the end of the year.

Multi the customer may come to the restaurant to eat to get a unique experience of the food. How can Huuva’s brick-and-mortar restaurant offer a unique experience when the restaurant serves food from five different restaurants, Ville Leppälä?

“Our partners are good, popular and local restaurants. They are places that you queue for and people talk about,” Leppälä justifies.
