Hospitals continue to endure high healthcare pressure despite the fact that the epidemiological reports from the Ministry of Health reflect, for yet another week, a decrease in the incidence of respiratory infections. This decrease, which may be partly influenced by the lower number of tests in Primary as it coincides with festive dates, is not being translated into a reduction in income.
“We are still under a lot of pressure. We have not noticed a drop in the flu, and we have noticed a rise in the Covid ”, sums up Enrique Bernal, head of Infectious at Reina Sofía. In this hospital there were 24 Covid patients admitted yesterday, another 22 with flu and 8 with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
In La Arrixaca, hospitalizations due to influenza have decreased (10 patients remain hospitalized for influenza, compared to 22 last week), while Covid patients increase, going from 17 to 19. ICU occupancy reaches almost 80%, and the Emergency Service woke up yesterday with 56 patients awaiting transfer to the ward, a figure that reflects significant saturation. The biggest collapses occurred at the Cartagena Hospital Complex, where a record for admissions and influx to the ER was broken, for which many patients had to wait in the corridors for several hours.
The Ministry of Health pointed out that, in general, the pressure on hospitals remains stable, “without significant changes or trends” with regard to flu and Covid. The contingency plans “are underway”, but “the situation is normal”.
