The World Video Game Hall of Fame honors the best games for longevity, geographic reach and influence. For this year, Resident Evil and Asteroids join the select group.
Those games that enjoy popularity for a sustained period and have influence on the video game industry or on popular culture and society in general can enter the Video Game Hall of Fame.
Asteroids, Myst, Resident Evil, SimCity and Ultima join the Video Game Hall of Fame.
For this year Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Guitar Hero and Metroid are left off the list of finalists.
Asteroids: Released in November 1979, Asteroids was inspired by the pioneering Spacewar (1962) and the first arcade video game, Nutting Associates’ Computer Space (1971). In Asteroids, players controlled a triangular ship floating in the middle of a minefield of moving space rocks.
myst: Traditionally, home PC games had been sold primarily to male users, with strategy and fantasy games predominating, but Myst was something different, appealing to casual users, especially women. It was the best-selling PC game of all time until 2001, when it lost that title to The Sims (2000).
resident Evil: Although it was not the first horror video game, it was the first to popularize what game publisher Capcom called the “survival horror” genre. Created by game director Shinji Mikami and released in 1996, Resident Evil’s combination of cheesy B-movie dialogue, absorbing gameplay, and chilling suspense made it a favorite of gamers looking for more mature video games.
sim city: The germ of the idea for SimCity came from designer Will Wright’s previous work on the game Raid on Bungeling Bay (1984), in which he discovered that playing with the map editor he had created was as fun as playing the game itself . The premise is simple. Players must try to build a city and respond to its problems and needs.
Last: It was based on a role-playing game mechanic that allowed the player to choose between a cleric, a fighter, a thief or a mage, each with 90 points to distribute among the six statistics of agility, charisma, intelligence, stamina, strength and wisdom. But what set Ultima apart from other computer role-playing games of the time was the size of its fictional world and its mix of fantasy and science fiction settings, themes, and stories.
