Hurricane “Ian” caused absurd scenes despite its destructive force. A reporter did less well on social media.
Miami – Weather extremes and natural forces are fascinating. The wind whipping across the sea, palm trees bending to the ground like toys and streets turning into rivers – these are impressive images for many. However, a reporter covering Hurricane Ian drew ridicule on social media.
“It’s 2022 and we’re still sending this poor reporter in the middle of hurricanes,” a Twitter user wrote barstoolsports. He posts a video about it. The clip is only 18 seconds long. It says live in capital letters in the left corner. Including further information, such as the current wind speed of 61 mph – the equivalent of almost 100 km/h.
The weather reporter stands with his legs apart on a street in the middle of a storm, with a microphone in his hand in front of the camera. He leans his body against the wind and rain, trying to keep his balance. Once he even gets on his knees. In the background, another man appears in the picture, who then fights his way back out of sight against the wind. Undefinable objects slide past the reporter at high speed.
“They want to get rid of him” – Twitter users scoff at weather reporters in the hurricane
Of course, the comments speculate as to who the reporter in the video is. “Nobody on the station likes the boy. They want to get rid of him,” jokes one user. Others suspect that it is the well-known TV meteorologist Jim Cantore, who is probably having the most fun of his life. It has not yet been confirmed whether the man who was really blown away by Hurricane Ian in front of the camera is actually the weather expert Cantore.
Even thousands of meters above the Atlantic, “Ian” showed his strength. A flight engineer with the NOAA Hurricane Hunters flew through Hurricane Ian. The scientist has been on the team for six years, but he has probably never experienced a flight like this before. An Australian weather reporter turned a rather normal live broadcast into a real thriller. (ml)
