Nitrogen mediator Johan Remkes and minister Christianne van der Wal (Nature and Nitrogen, VVD) believe that the supermarket sector does not take responsibility by not joining the group on Thursday to discuss nitrogen policy. After the conversation with the construction sector on Wednesday, the two politicians expressed their disappointment at the rejection of the invitation by the Central Bureau for Food Trade (CBL), which announced that decision on Monday.
Remkes and Van der Wal were harsh in their judgment: “I often hear very nice words about corporate social responsibility. But this attitude does not reflect that,” said Remkes. According to Van der Wal, the nitrogen problem “cannot just be put on the farmer’s plate” and “all market parties must take responsibility”. She believes that CBL is wrongly making itself “dependent on the farmers” to come and talk. The umbrella organization said on Monday that it only wanted to join Remkes after talks had started again with the farmers’ organizations to find a solution to the nitrogen problem.
According to Remkes, the conversation with the construction sector was “open and constructive”. According to him, the organizations present placed “severe comments” on cabinet policy. In particular, the construction sector has considered innovation as a means of getting out of the nitrogen crisis. According to Remkes, the question is to what extent it is demonstrable that innovation actually leads to improvement of nature.
