Reinout Oerlemans has a new part-time job. The television producer has been appointed by the State Department as the new honorary consul in Los Angeles.
Honorary consuls, a voluntary position, work in places where the Netherlands does not have an embassy. They offer help to Dutch people in emergency and crisis situations, such as hospitalization, missing persons or death. In addition, they represent Dutch trade interests, for example by arranging company visits. In total, almost 300 are active worldwide. They are appointed for a period of five years, shorter or longer is also possible.
“I am honored to represent the Dutch government here in Los Angeles and to connect the Netherlands, where I was born, with LA, the place I call my home,” said Oerlemans. He is looking forward to supporting Dutch people, companies and cultural institutions.
Honorary consuls have a ‘very limited form’ of diplomatic immunity on the basis of the Vienna Convention, according to the national government. This only applies to tasks they perform in their position as honorary consul.
