This Tuesday the starting signal was given at orehabilitation work on the bridge over the Ría de Cubas that connects the towns of Somo (Ribamontán al Mar) and Pedreña (Marina de Cudeyo), that have a budget of 3.7 million euros and a 18 month execution period. The project It will extend the useful life of the bridge, reinforce its structure and improve the safety of pedestrians and vehicles with new sidewalks, pavement and protective elements..
Furthermore, as a novelty, The action includes the construction of a cycle path on the interior side of the road, with the expectation that in the future it can be joined with the rest of the itineraries planned by the regional government in the area. In his speech on the occasion of the start of the works, the President of the Government, María José Sáenz de Buruaga, has valued the work carried out by the Ministry of Development to process from scratch and in “record time” a project that was among those paralyzed as a consequence of the alleged corruption plot uncovered in the Department of Public Works in the previous legislature.
The president also recalled the origins of this infrastructure from 1977 which at that time was a “milestone”, since it was the last pending section to complete the coastal highway (El Astillero-Santoña), and which responded to a “historical claim of Cantabria against the State”. And it has stressed the need to undertake this “long-awaited” improvement by the Cantabrians and, especially, by the residents of Somo and Pedreña, due to the state of deterioration presented by an “indispensable infrastructure” for the territorial structuring of Cantabria and through which up to 13,400 vehicles can pass per day during periods of high influx of visitors.
THE PROJECT
The structure, 320 meters long and 11 meters wide, is in an advanced state of structural degradation. due to the effect of marine action, the passage of time and the lack of conservation actions in its almost 50 years of existence. The project includes the rehabilitation of the concrete and deck structure, the renovation of drainage, sidewalks and pavement, and the installation of a new stainless steel railing along the bridge. Likewise, new lighting will be installed and horizontal and vertical signage will be updated.
