Paolo Truzzu (FdI) candidate in Sardinia: everything is off for the League. Alberto Cirio in Piedmont, Vito Bardi in Basilicata (Forza Italia) and Marco Marsilio in Abruzzo (Fratelli d'Italia) also miss out. Also because on Zaia's third term… Inside
It's a total clash in the Centre-right on regional elections and in particular on Sardinia, the first to go to the vote at the end of February. But, in cascade, the chaos affects all the other regions, even those that will vote in 2025. Fratelli d'Italia has now already started the electoral campaign, in agreement with Forza Italia and Noi Moderati, to Paolo Truzzumayor of Cagliaria Melonian very close to Giovanni Donzelli.
But the League isn't there. And with both national and local leaders he wants to continue to focus on the reconfirmation of the outgoing president Christian Solinas, exponent of the Sardinian Action Party, who has in fact been an offshoot of the Northern League for years. FdI, which, thanks to the results of the 2022 political elections and the polls, wants to count more in the regions (it is currently heavily underweighted), has decided to break the agreement and not to re-nominate the outgoing governors.
And so everything falls apart for the League. They also jump Alberto Cirio in Piedmont, Vito Bardi in Basilicata (Forza Italia) and Marco Marsilio in Abruzzo (Fratelli d'Italia). It will be up to a summit of the three national leaders – Giorgia Meloni, Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani – to find the solution (very likely already this week). But the tension is very high. Also because the compromise hypothesis according to which FdI would have opened up to the third mandate of the governors (during the press conference at the beginning of the year the prime minister did not close and spoke of “matter that concerns Parliament“) allowing Luca Zaia to run again next year in Veneto, and in exchange the League would support Truzzu in Sardinia by abandoning Solinas, is categorically denied by the top leaders of the Prime Minister's party. Brothers of Italy, in addition to the Sardinia and upon the reconfirmation of Marsilio in Abruzzo, he also wants a large northern region. Either Piedmont this year or Veneto next.
But also Antonio Tajani neither Cirio in Piedmont nor Bardi in Basilicata is in favor of and does not want them to touch each other, where instead the League – if it loses Sardinia – wants the candidate and already has the name ready: the regional commissioner Pasquale Pepe. A very difficult mess to untangle which at this point will end up directly on the table of the three-way summit – Meloni, Salvini, Tajani – which should be held by the weekend or, at most, at the beginning of next week. Furthermore, times are very tight.
Meanwhile, the chaos in the center-right has also led to consequences in the center-left. The former mayor of Cagliari, Massimo Zedda, wants to return to the leadership of his city and as president of the Sardinian Progressists he relaunches his candidacy. In fact, there could be early municipal elections if the current mayor, Paolo Truzzu (FdI), is indeed the candidate for president of the Sardinia region.
Zedda, former opponent of Christian Solinas at Regional of five years ago won by the latter, he will focus on the electoral campaign for Cagliari and is oriented not to run again – he explains to Agi – for the regional council. “We are however evaluating whether to insert my name on the Progressives symbol that we will deposit next Monday”, anticipates Zedda, who is the president of the party.
