In times of tragedy, pain and difficulty, the best of each can also emerge. This is the case of Murcian basketball, united practically in its entirety to offer a space of reception, integration and escape from its harsh reality for children and adolescents from the war between Russia and Ukraine, which devastates the civilian population of the latter, with an important representation in the Region of Murcia.
This initiative, promoted by Ricardo Martínez, director of CB San José de la Vega, and the father of one of the players of the gold and purple club, consists of the total will of the clubs integrated under the umbrella of the Basketball Federation of the Region of Murcia to project basketball as a supportive sport in which everyone is accommodated, and through which basketball clubs commit to accepting boys and girls who arrive in the Region in their training dynamics escaping from the horror of war, thus showing full support to all the families who, due to the urgent need to emigrate, have forced them to leave everything behind and start a new life, in which basketball plays a facilitating role in their acceptance and adaptation .
“Count on us”, the most repeated phrase among all the presidents of the basketball clubs, who work together through a WhatsApp group in which they address the most important issues in regional basketball. “A great idea”, “our doors are open”, “congratulations on the initiative”, other reactions that demonstrate the high degree of understanding between clubs.
Forty teams support a project launched by San José de la Vega
In total, there are forty clubs that, after the first step taken by those from San José de la Vega, have decided to support the project, occupying all the geographical areas of the Region, from Águilas to Yecla and from Moratalla to Cartagena, covering the Guadalentín valley – Eliocroca de Lorca offers its different sports sections, not only basketball – as well as Murcia capital and its surroundings, such as the coastal areas in Mar Menor – Marme de San Javier also takes care of La Manga– and Mediterranean coast. The clubs also encourage host families in the Region to contact them so that their new members can also enjoy basketball at no cost. The first to receive refugees, those from the Red Deportiva Yecla, two brothers from a family that is beginning their journey towards their new normality in the Altiplano, and who are already training with their new club, which also provides them with sportswear.
The proposal of their clubs has been very well received within the Basketball Federation of the Region of Murcia, which, through its president Juan Carlos Hernández, has committed to its components to give away basketballs to all these children that they become part of the family of each of the clubs. In addition, it offers its coordination to carry out activities and days of coexistence in the near future.
the most choral
This step forward given by Murcian basketball is, among the different initiatives carried out by Spanish basketball in solidarity with those affected by the War in Ukraine, the one that has been carried out more jointly, although not the only one . In practically the entire national territory, institutions and clubs have wanted to show solidarity with those most in need.
