Regeni’s death, trial canceled. Parents: “Egypt won”
Resounding decision of the Corte di Assise, the trial for the death of Giulio Regeni in Cairo it was canceled. The reason is linked to the “failure to notify the 007 Egyptians of the subpoena in the courtroom”. The bitterness – we read in Repubblica – of Giulio’s parents, who, however, do not give up. “We have never stopped in five and a half years, certainly we are not giving up now.” Paola and Claudio Regeni, at the third bench of the bunker room of the Rebibbia prison, listen to the reading of the device with their youngest daughter Irene next to them. Alessandra Ballerini, the lawyer, is a step forward. They remain silent. They weren’t expecting it. Nobody expected it. The third section of the Corte di Assise of Rome has just finished reading a long device (while the light has even gone out) that resets the trial of the four agents of the National Security, the Egyptian civil secret service, accused of kidnapping, torture and the murder of Giulio Regeni.
Therefore, – continues Repubblica – the defense arguments were accepted, because the decree ordering the judgment was not notified to them. But it was not done because Egypt, knowingly, did not cooperate in the investigation. “We are surprised and embittered,” say sources of the Prosecutor’s Office. “The attempt to prevent the trial from being held by not cooperating has been successful.” The decision is also unexpected because, on the same subject, a judge had already expressed himself in a different way. The magistrate Pierluigi Balestrieri, who had ordered the trial, had in fact believed that the trial should in any case begin because the defendants knew. All to be redone then, the practice returns to the starting point, long times are expected.
