Checo without problems despite the traffic
“Sleepless nights, then relief after the filming day at Silverstone.” Red Bull's technical director Pierre Waché underlined that the technicians of the Milton Keynes team took a big risk in redistributing the air intakes and radiators to obtain the sufficient level of cooling while 'respecting' the new shapes of the RB20 established in the design phase, shapes that surprised the competition at the time of the presentation of the new car from the Anglo-Austrian team. The RB20 “He still has a lot of problems that aren't visible” added Waché and reliability problems cannot be ruled out at this start of the season for a car that is very different from the one that dominated the 2023 season with 21 victories out of the 22 races contested.
What could have been a problem, the cooling, actually seems not to be one although the cool temperatures recorded in Bahrain last weekend may have helped Red Bull not to put the RB20 to the test. Interviewed by the German newspaper motorsport-total Helmut Marko highlighted that Perez's race in Sakhir is a good sign regarding the cooling system developed by Red Bull: “Our concept works, Perez had no problems despite being in traffic for a long time.”
Marko also added that the decrease in wind intensity was another factor that affected the RB20 on Saturday after some difficulties encountered on Thursday and Friday: “In general I think our car is more effective in the race, but on Saturday the wind dropped and this helped us a lot. What if we dominate like in 2023? The competition has improved and become more compact, each team has different strengths depending on the compounds or depending on what is being examined between performance on the flying lap or effectiveness on the race pace. Jeddah is a very different track with many fast corners, if we are as effective as in Bahrain then we can be optimistic for the future.”
