The Silverstone Red Bull is a revamped car over the winning RB18 in Canada. Milton Keynes’ single-seater captured the general attention by sporting a new engine hood, designed to improve the flows directed to the beam-wing, as well as the cleanliness of the sides through a strategic arrangement of the cooling grids. However, the innovations are not limited to the upper part of the car, but also affect the underbody area.
The fund has been the subject of repeated iterations over the course of the season. The first update from the inaugural race debuted in Miami, followed by that of Barcelona, which in turn preceded the changes in Miami. At Silverstone Red Bull takes another step forward, bringing an updated fund. From the outside it can be observed that a notch has been obtained along the lateral edge, in an area that is also critical for the management of the tire squirt, ie the containment of the turbulence generated by the rolling of the tire.
The bottom, however, also has a refinement of the geometries in the lower part invisible from the outside, along the lateral Venturi channel, aiming to obtain a better distribution of pressure in order to find the best compromise between load and aerodynamic resistance. The bottom continues to be the most important component for load generation, which is why upgrades to the underbody may actually be even more decisive than the more conspicuous changes to the hood.
The news at the bottom were tested on Friday by Max Verstappen, and were then also installed on Sergio Perez’s car on Saturday. Red Bull revealed some set-up difficulties in the first free practice sessions, not necessarily related to the exploitation of the new features, but the times on Saturday morning showed an incredibly fast RB18 on the straight. In any case, the Milton Keynes team confirmed the updates, testifying to the ever-present correlation between track and factory simulations.
