In recent days, a record number of sea lions have been recorded at Pier 39 in San Francisco. Nearly 1,000 specimens have been counted, the highest record in 15 years. Experts believe that this phenomenon is due to the fact that there is a school of large anchovies in the area, on which these mammals feed.
The influx of sea lions has been so concentrated that the barges placed at the dock to allow the animals to float and sunbathe are at risk due to the weight they support. In the coming weeks numbers are expected to decrease as the animals continue their migration south.
