Happy ending for four complex operations including the correction of a rare malformation in a child and the removal of a brain lesion in a pregnant woman
“There were four interventions that engaged all our abilities – says Marco Locatelli, director of Neurosurgery at the Milan Polyclinic – because they concerned pathologies profoundly different from each other, and all involving the central nervous system. However, every difficulty has been brilliantly overcome thanks to the deep harmony and collaboration that we have built over time with the professionals who support us in this type of intervention: from pediatric neurosurgery to intensive care, up to gynecology, neuroreanimation, pediatric resuscitation, Otolaryngology, maxillofacial surgery and neuroradiology ».
Child with giant aneurysm
The first case faced by neurosurgeons was to “correct” a giant aneurysm of a cerebral artery affecting a 6-year-old boy. An extremely rare disease that has a very high mortality. The little boy, who arrived at the hospital already in a coma due to a major hemorrhage, was immediately operated on to exclude the aneurysm from the bloodstream and is already out of danger: right now he is successfully facing post-surgery rehabilitation.
Safe mom and son
The second case, on the other hand, involved a 30-year-old pregnant woman. A few weeks before the expected date of delivery, she experienced severe decompensation with progressive loss of vision
. Arriving at the Mangiagalli Clinic of the Polyclinic, the experts immediately noticed one mass involving the skull and face, and which also compressed the optic nerve. Here teamwork was even more fundamental, because c‘the mother had to operate but also to deliver her baby. Everything went well: the baby came into the world without complications, and the woman immediately underwent a major surgery for the removal of the mass, which turned out to be a benign tumor. The neurosurgeons “blocked” further neurological damage, together with the maxillofacial surgeons; today the woman is already at home breastfeeding her baby, and the post-surgery course is confirmed as good.
Intervention with optical fibers
Then there was the case of a 75-year-old woman, very fit for her age, had it not been for a massive tumor that had started growing at the base of her skull. The exceptionality of this intervention lies above all in theto
The approach that neurosurgeons have chosen: in fact, they used special optical fibers and micro-instruments which, introduced from the nose, reached the site of the tumor and removed it, without leaving visible scars on the outside. After the necessary rehabilitation, you will also be able to resume everyday life.
Cerebral vascular malformation
Finally, there is the case of a man of nearly 60, who was always in good health and then suddenly struck by cerebral hemorrhage. Early diagnostic investigations revealed a complex cerebral vascular malformation, which had not been noticed before. Faced with this new challenge, neurosurgeons have chosen a multi-step combined treatment, which has ‘wedged’ interventional neuroradiology treatments and definitive surgical treatment. The operation was perfectly successful, and the man has already returned home.
Rare pathologies
“The Policlinico di Milano is a reference for over 330 different rare diseases – comments Flora Peyvandi, acting scientific director of the Polyclinic of Milan – and the presence of various experts, doctors, surgeons and dedicated researchers make us the specific site and one of the most suitable for the complete care of patients with rare disease. The interventions of our neurosurgeons are a great testimony to this ».
Cooperation
«The results of these operations, much more than positive – declares Ezio Belleri, general manager of the Milan Polyclinic – are a source of pride for us, because they demonstrate the actual great medical-surgical realities of our hospital. But, above all, they confirm it collaboration spirit and the dedication of our doctors, nurses and all staff who gravitate around complex activities such as surgery and hospitalization fragile patients “. .
