In 2020, parents were generally very satisfied with their lives and counseling services, but were left without support in many matters during pregnancy.
Anna Rotkirch raised an important issue in the fertility debate – the well-being of families with babies and mothers (HS 27.3.). The Institute of Health and Welfare (THL) is interested in the coping of families with babies and monitors their well-being FinKids– with the help of research.
In 2020, parents were generally very satisfied with their lives and counseling services, but during pregnancy they lacked support in many matters, especially in preparing for childbirth. After the birth, the parents received insufficient support for, among other things, coping with themselves and their spouse, as well as with the baby's sleeping, feeding and crying. We take parents' experiences seriously and use the results in the evaluation and development of counseling services and, more broadly, maternity care services. Development work takes place in welfare areas and is supported by THL's national development network for maternity and child counseling activities.
This year, parents of families with babies will again have the opportunity to tell about their experiences in the data collection that starts in June, to which THL invites parents in a personal letter. The more people answer, the more reliable information we get and the better we can offer support in counseling centers and maternity hospitals to those who need it most.
