FAES criticizes Sánchez's movement, but lets it be known that it believes it can turn out well
“Populist nonsense”, “effectual maneuver”… is how the foundation of former president José María Aznar, FAES, describes Pedro Sánchez's decision to cancel his agenda until Monday, while he meditates whether or not to continue as President of the Government after the attacks on his wife, Begoña Gómez. The foundation makes its own speculations about the reasons: It wonders if the movement is due to a “psychological breakdown”, which it considers “unlikely” and suggests two other hypotheses: “an unpleasant judicial horizon” or “a very complicated political situation” due to to such a “dysfunctional and destructive coalition of governments”—Sanchez's pacts with other parties are for investiture, not government, unlike the alliances between the PP and Vox.
The text, which analyzes the letter addressed by the president to the citizens, includes allusions to the terrorist group Hamas —“it is better that he does not come out to praise Sánchez again,” they say—; and Chavismo, but above all, it suggests that Aznar believes that the president can succeed, by warning of the supposed dangers of him being like that. “The people, the people of populism, mobilized to make democracy real and hail a charismatic leader who cannot be bound by outdated institutions,” he says in a mocking tone. “If that happens, starting Monday Spain will have taken a somersault towards what is remarkably mildly called illiberal democracy and which in reality is the populist pathology that destroys democracy, the separation of powers, pluralism and freedom of expression.” ”, he concludes.
