‘It has been shown time and time again that women have different heat management than men and that they get cold more quickly’ and ‘Long live the champions of euthanasia’: these are some reactions to news topics that keep readers busy. Below are the letters that appeared in the newspaper of Monday 4 April. You can send in a response yourself via [email protected].
2 degrees down | Female civil servant was already cold in the office
‘Heating bearing’ (AD 2-4). On International Women’s Day, there was again a lot of attention for the inequality between women and men, also from the national government. I am therefore very surprised that the government is now announcing that the temperature in government buildings will drop by an average of 2 degrees. Time and again it has been shown that women have a different heat management than men and that they get cold faster. Ministers Jetten and De Jonge and the spokespersons for trade unions Mast and Van der Vlugt indicate that civil servants should only wear a sweater or an extra pair of socks. I usually wear three layers of clothing to the office to keep warm, and I am sure many female colleagues are with me. Ways to reduce gas consumption must be looked at, but I don’t think it is a solution to literally leave all female civil servants out in the cold.

Eli’s trauma | Youth care didn’t help, but luckily there was that way out
‘No more life after 28 institutions’ (AD 2-4). Aside from the most tragic thing that happened to Eli – her death – it is terrible that she most likely could not express her shattering fear. I don’t think anyone can convey that, let alone that the listener can actually sense it. Only those who have experienced it themselves understand it. Eli must have lived in inhospitable solitude. When I read how often she has been removed from home, Youth Care has really not understood it. That’s not how you help. Youth care took the psychotherapist’s seat with divorced parents to bring them together. While the parents absolutely did not want this. Lucky Eli was able to get euthanasia so she wouldn’t have to take the degrading leap to get out of her mental anguish. Long live the champions of euthanasia, led by Pia Dijkstra.

Qatar World Cup | And now football
‘That could be more difficult’ (AD 2-4). The opponents in the group stage of the World Cup are known. Let’s start preparing now and stop talking about corruption and modern slavery. If countries struggle to play in Qatar, they should withdraw. No country has the courage to do that. So from now on we will only talk about the game, the players, the coaches, the matches and the dream of becoming world champions. I look forward!

Illegal Gambling | I often found football results so strange
‘Professional football players involved in illegal gambling site’ (AD 2-4). I also bet on football matches. And I was surprised when I went wrong in easy duels. I read in the article that players themselves did not bet on their match. Of course not. Others did that for them. I’ve lost quite a bit of money and I think millions of people with me. I don’t trust any match anymore.

Buy out farmers | Meat farmers use the wrong argument
‘Rattling a bag of money is not enough’ (AD 1-4). Bert Gruppen does not see it happening that his calf fattening farm is bought up, because in times of war food has to be provided. It strikes me that meat farmers use this line of reasoning more often. What do 1900 calves live on, and all those millions of animals locked up in stables? I think there is a grain shortage due to the war in Ukraine and not a meat shortage. How much food shortage, especially in poor countries, is our daily piece of meat worth to us?
Atie Broers, Maarssen.
Account in rubles | Putin cornered the West
‘The Netherlands refuses to pay for gas in rubles’ (AD 1-4). Unbelievable, Putin has us by the balls. The West is lagging behind: Putin has tightened ties with China and India and is sure to provide them with favorable oil contracts. Now is the time for Putin to use the blackmail tool ‘don’t pay in rubles, then no more oil and gas’. The West must choose; bend or crack. Russia is filling the war chest thanks to China and India.

Tour book | Laughed a lot at Thijs’ column
Yes, Thijs Zonneveld managed to make me, the old lady, laugh out loud with his column ‘Rondeboek’ on Friday. Bending over my newspaper, I laughed while reading his experience of the Tour of Flanders. Delicious! Thanks Thijs.
