Probably if Ferruccio Lamborghini and Enzo Ferrari had never had a difference of opinion we would never have seen the birth of the car manufacturer del Toro and its jewels. For example, one of the first creations of the Sant’Agata Bolognese brand was the Lamborghini 400 GT in 2 + 2 version, cars that replaced the 350 GT in the still very young range of the Italian company. Few units were produced, with just over 200 units made from 1966 to 1968. Now one of the 400 GT 2 + 2 specimens is up for auction and will be beaten at RM Sothebys’ Arizona event next January.
The Lamborghini 400 GT 2 + 2 was an elegant sports coupe capable of combining performance and comfort. Born to relaunch sales after limited success of the 350 GT, this car differed slightly from the model it replaced, with some new elements in the front such as the double round headlights that took the place of the single ovoid solution, as well as a redesigned grille. The cockpit was spacious and can accommodate two adults in the front and two children as rear passengers. Some changes had also been made to the interior, with an update of the dashboard and interior door panels. Pushing the Lamborghini 400 GT 2 + 2 was a 320 HP 4.0-liter V12 engine combined with a five-speed manual gearbox derived from that of the 350 GT. Thanks to this power unit, the elegant supercar del Toro was able to reach a top speed of 260 km / h.
Making such a car meant trying to challenge Ferrari on its terrain, proposing an elegant and sporty car capable of rivaling the models proposed by the Prancing Horse in those years. The Lamborghini 400 GT 2 + 2 fully represents the great rivalry between the two brands and their founders. The specimen that will be auctioned has been certified by the Polo Storico and can be admired at the Arizona Biltmore Resort on January 27th. The estimated price sales are between $ 450,000 and $ 550,000.
