Ramon Valdiviaexecutive vice president of the International Road Transport Association (ASTIC), has been re-elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the President of the International Road Transport Organization (IRU), based in Geneva. Valdivia, who represents Spain’s road transport sector, will continue in office for a second three-year term starting January 1, 2025.
This re-election reinforces the position of the Spanish industry in the decision-making bodies of the IRUwhich has delegates from more than 100 countries and is dedicated to defining global strategies and policies in the transportation sector. During the general assembly of the IRU, in which Valdivia’s position was voted on, Radu Dinescu as president.
In his candidacy speech, Valdivia highlighted the work of transport professionals in Spain, especially in emergency situations like the recent DANAwhere companies have provided essential goods and support to affected communities. In addition, he highlighted the relevance of having promoted the creation of World Transport Day, to be celebrated on November 26, an achievement that, according to him, reinforces the recognition of professionals in this sector.
Valdivia also addressed the regulatory and decarbonization challenges facing the sectordriven by European initiatives such as the Green Deal and the Fit-for-55 program, which seek to reduce emissions. The manager stressed the need for regulatory stability and legal certainty so that companies can plan their strategies and adapt to these changes by 2030.
ASTIC, the Valdivia organization, has been part of the IRU since 1960 and represents more than 200 transport companies in Spain. The IRU, founded in 1948, currently represents 3.5 million transport companies in more than 100 countries and manages the global TIR customs transit system.
