The double withdrawal of the Ferrari in the Azerbaijani GP and the lack of victory in Canada aggravated the crisis in the results of the team from Maranello, already plagued by previous technical forfeits or protagonist of strategic blunders. There have been, in truth, episodes completely attributable to the errors of the pilots: Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
After a ‘fourth’ start in the first race of the world championship, to which was then added the triumphant success in the Australian Grand Prix, the Monegasque was in fact the author of a spin in the home test for the team at Imola, such as to have pushed the number 16 only to a colorless sixth position at the finish. In the opening stages of the same race, moreover, there was the withdrawal of his teammate, who ended up in the sand of the ‘Enzo e Dino Ferrari’ racetrack without any fault after a contact with Ricciardo. The real mistake, however, Sainz had made in the Melbourne race, the one before Imola, during which the Iberian had finished his performance prematurely with a spin. In addition, there is the impact against the barriers that occurred in the PL2 in Miami. Not to mention that in Montreal it was legitimate to ask the Spaniard something more, at least in qualifying, where he let himself be beaten by Fernando Alonso.
Distractions, these, what a second Ralf Schumacher impact on the performance of Ferrari, already plagued by technical problems seen above all in Baku: “At the beginning the Ferrari was a really strong and fast car – explained Michael’s brother a ServusTV – but then the pilots made many mistakes and now the team is paying. The stupid thing is that once that happens, it comes all over you. Ferrari finally has a competitive package, but now comes such a thing. Now they just have to stick together and this is where Mattia Binotto is very good: looking at him from the outside, he seems very calm in his management “.
