Silvio Berlusconi, Matteo Salvini and Giorgia Meloni
Quirinale, Center-right in pieces. The consequences of the flop of Berlusconi’s candidacy
Once upon a time there was the Center Right. What on paper should have dictated the political agenda and used the springboard for the election of the new President of the Republic to launch the long sprint towards the political elections. Yes, once upon a time. The probable, almost certain, flop of Silvio Berlusconi, with the withdrawal of the candidacy to Quirinale which could arrive by Monday 24 January, brings with it a sensational fracture in the Center-right, in particular between Matteo Salvini and the former Cavaliere, who mark a historic turning point for Italian politics.
Qualified sources explain ad Affaritaliani.it that the blue leader, once he has thrown in the towel, intends to nominate for the Colle Giuliano Amato agree with Enrico Letta. Or alternatively, Mario Draghi. Director of the operation Gianni Letta, uncle of the Democratic Party secretary. Too bad that the Northern League leader does not want to lose the role of king maker of the Quirinale match at all and is preparing to propose as successor to Sergio Mattarella Marcello Pera or alternatively, Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati.
A split between the two parties of the CDX that have decided to join the so-called ‘government of the best’ of Super Mario which, in addition to the names, sees the coalition leadership itself, destined to shatter, as the object of contention. Amato would suit the Dem very well, even if some perplexities might be encountered in the corpaccione of the 5 Star Movement. Even more doubts in the pentastellati, however, about the name of Dragons, always and above all due to the fear / risk of running in early political elections.
Berlusconi remains in Milan, CDX summit at risk Silvio Berlusconi will remain in Milan tomorrow, and therefore the center-right summit initially scheduled for lunch time is postponed. From Forza Italia they let it be known that perhaps the meeting with the other leaders of the coalition could be held on Friday or over the weekend. |
On the opposite side, the names of Pear and / or Casellati would be rejected to the sender by the Dems, but – for different reasons – they could find quite a few votes among the 5 stars (it should not be forgotten that the current president of the Senate was voted at the beginning of the legislature, when Count I left, also from the grillini ). A discreet mess, in short, all the result of the increasingly evident break between the secretary of the Carroccio and the former Knight. So much so that, in the end, to get everyone to agree and avoid a long and embarrassing impasse, the solution could be that of the number one candidate of Matteo Renzi, or the former Christian Democrat Pierferdinando Casini.
For the moment, formally, in today’s meeting the Center left (Pd-M5S-LeU) found a common line, quite simple: it expects the Center-right withdrawals Berlusconi and for now no names are mentioned. But there is no lack of divisions on subsequent solutions. Then there is the Brothers of Italy. In the polls the party of Giorgia Meloni it surpasses the League, but in terms of numbers among the great FdI voters it is much less consistent than the Northern League. On paper Melons can hardly be with Beloved and with the axis with the Democratic Party and, in theory, should lean towards the hypothesis of Center-Right, Pera or Casellati. But FdI reiterated that “we too have our names” and above all Meloni cannot afford to relegate herself to the role of Salvini’s handmaid.
