Putin spoke about the state examination of the extension of the “Power of Siberia-2” to China
The development of design documentation for the Soyuz Vostok gas pipeline has been completed, and a state examination of the project is currently underway, and its impact on the environment is being assessed. The current stage of the work was described by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Mongolia, reports RIA Novosti.
Soyuz Vostok is part of the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project, which is to run through Mongolia to Western China. The estimated length of the route is one thousand kilometers.
Two weeks ago, Hong Kong’s The South China Morning Post reportedthat Mongolia excluded the pipeline from its long-term development plan until 2028. Experts assessed this decision as a rejection of the project or its suspension for several years.
In China, which is set to become the main buyer of Russian gas via this route, officials have also not mentioned the pipeline in recent years. However, in late August, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the Power of Siberia 2 project was at a high level of readiness.

In June of this year, the Financial Times, citing its own sources, reported that the main reason for the delay in negotiations on Power of Siberia 2 is the price of gas. Beijing wants to buy it at almost domestic Russian prices and is ready to wait for Russia to agree to its terms for as long as necessary, because it has alternative suppliers. Meanwhile, such conditions are unfavorable for Moscow, since they will not even allow it to recoup the cost of building the pipeline.
