Emiliano García-Page is practically the only active socialist who, in recent months, has openly spoken out against Pedro Sánchez’s plans to carry out his investiture thanks to the votes of Carles Puigdemont’s party and a pact that includes the same amnesty for those accused of the ‘procés’ that until July 23 his entire party considered unconstitutional. This Tuesday, one day after the acting President of the Government and Yolanda Díaz will present the programmatic agreement on which they intend to build a coalition Executive, and on the eve of the Federal Committee that the PSOE will hold this Saturday, he returned to the fray.
Page stressed that the PSOE-Sumar pact, to which in general terms he had no problem, although there were some nuances, is only the simple and comfortable part of the negotiations that the leader of his party needs to make prosper to continue in Moncloa. And he insisted that it’s what’s left that worries him. «We all know that the difficult part is in Puigdemont. And you know that my thesis is that I do not want Spain to be watching a remote control from Waterloo and that in this country they make us all dance a political sardana.
The Castilian-La Mancha president also reiterated, during an inaugural conference at the ‘Castilla-La Mancha towards the future’ conference organized by Europa Press, that it must be taken into account that the possibility of introducing the amnesty in the Magna Carta has already been debated and It was expressly rejected during the drafting of the text in the Cortes Generales, but above all he defended that the initiative that is now on the table is especially rejectable. “If the constituent is told that there is a self-amnesty model, that – he argued – would not fit into any possible constitutional figure in the universe.”
Hours later, Puigdemont responded to the socialist with a message that contained a certain amount of mockery but also a certain tone of satisfaction for the power he now has in his hands. “Let Emiliano know that if he chooses the Empordà style instead of the Selvatano style, I will not take it into account,” he wrote on his X account, formerly Twitter, along with the video clip of a song by the Catalan group The Tyets.
This Saturday, the socialists have the opportunity to speak out on these issues in the highest body of the formation between congresses, convened, among other things, to set a date for the consultation with the militancy on the agreement with Sumar (the rest of the pacts to which that can be reached with other political forces will not be subjected to militancy). Page does not guarantee, however, his presence. For agenda reasons, they say around him, since he has a trip to France to participate in a meeting of the Assembly of European Wine Regions, of which he is president.
