The educational community of Madrid could be organized in one of the most forceful mobilizations in recent years. This Thursday, hundreds of teachers will meet in an assembly called by the organization Assembly Less Lessons to decide the new school year mobilizations and the possibility of calling a indefinite strike. With the slogan “We do not want more loose strikes”, the group seeks to take the protest to a higher level, with the aim of demanding structural changes in the region’s educational system.
The reasons behind this growing discontent are already countless. The overload that teachers face, the increase in classroom ratios and the lack of resources are just some of the main demands. In addition, they denounce the lack of effective measures by the Ministry of Education to improve their working conditions and the quality of the public education system. Although specific strikes have been carried out in recent months, the unions and teachers’ assemblies now raise the horizon of a greater mobilization.
The core of the protests continues to be the reduction of teaching hours. Teachers claim to have more time to prepare their classes, offer personalized attention to students and dedicate themselves to administrative work more efficiently.
What began as a mobilization focused mainly on Secondary and Primary Education has been gaining strength with the incorporation of other groups. Vocational training teachers, psycho-pedagogical guidance teams and workers from other areas of educational centers have joined their voices in protest and self-organization, reflecting the transversality of the unrest.
