“Chile requires a new public financing system for higher education”
President Boric addressed challenges in education, particularly about the Government’s announcement regarding the forgiveness of the CAE, the State Guaranteed Credit that higher education students have with the banks.
“In the weeks prior to this Public Account, a broad debate has been opened on the financing of higher education. It is time we reached a permanent solution. State Guaranteed Credit has been a policy that played a role in access to higher education in recent decades, but it suffered from serious shortcomings. For this reason, along with the free policy, Chile requires a new public financing system for higher education,” said Boric.
In September, the president assured, the Government will submit to Congress a bill with a new public financing system that will replace the State Guaranteed Credit and the Solidarity Fund. “This will provide a progressive and fair solution to debtors and will especially recognize those who have fulfilled their payment obligations and those who have not been able to comply because they do not have income to do so, which are the vast majority of current debtors. This project will be gradual , progressive and self-contained, not requiring resources from the Fiscal Pact,” the president explained.
