According to Circana data shared by market analyst Matt Piscatella, PS5 sold 8% more units compared to what was done by PS4 in the same time frame, as far as the US market is concerned.
This confirms the excellent sales numbers of the console, despite the fact that in the last fiscal year the ambitious target of 25 million units initially set by Sony was not reached, subsequently lowered to 21 million units and missed by only 200,000 units. For the next fiscal year (ending March 31, 2025) they are estimated at 18 million of consoles sold. From launch to today, 59.3 million PS5 units have been sold worldwide.
April hardware data is not positive in the USA
On the contrary, again according to Circana data, Xbox Series X|S sales are 13% lower to those of Xbox One, “slightly lower” than the Xbox 360 and 13% lower and higher than the first Xbox. Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn’t shared the sales numbers of its consoles for years, so we don’t know how many Series X and S units have actually been sold from launch to today.
As previously reported, US market sales data for April highlighted a 3% drop in revenues of the video game market on an annual basis, mainly attributable to the hardware market, which saw a decrease of 43%, going from 368 million dollars in 2023 to 208 this year. This may be partly motivated by the inevitable physiological decline of Nintendo Switch, but those of PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are also slowing down significantly.
