The second quarter of 2022 (April – June) was not a record for the videogame market in the USA, far from it. NPD Group unveiled the data for that period and region and allowed us to see that PS5 and Switch are the consoles best sellersalong with other information.
According to what has been indicated, in the USA there has been a 13% decline year over year in the second quarter of 2022. Specifically, spending in terms of content (games, subscriptions …) fell by 13%, while accessories lost 11% and finally hardware 1%. The mobile side also saw a decline, precisely by 12%. The only component that has grown is that of non-mobile subscriptions.
As for precisely the hardware, the best-selling consoles are Nintendo Switch, if calculated based on the number of units, and PS5, if calculated based on total expenditure (also conditioned by the fact that PS5 costs more than Switch). As always, sales are also affected by the quantity of units the company is able to produce.
“The increase in prices in daily shopping categories such as food and gasoline, the return of experiential expenses such as travel and participation in live events, the reduction of the releases of new games and the continuous limitation of supplies of hardware for consoles new generation are all factors that likely contributed to the decline in the second quarter, “he said Mat Piscatella, a video game industry analyst at The NPD Group. “After a period of sustained growth, consumer spending continues to be above pre-pandemic levels. However, unpredictable and rapidly changing conditions could continue to affect the market in unexpected ways in the coming quarters.”
