Mark Cerny, the architect behind the PS5 and PS4, stated that consoles will have a “bright future” and a crucial role in the gaming market, as long as they continue to boast a relationship between quality, performance and advantageous price compared to other platforms, such as PCs and smartphones.
This, in summary, is what he reported in an interview with GamesIndustry, where among various topics we talked about how the lines of demarcation between platforms are blurring from generation to generation. For example, it is now possible to play PlayStation titles on PC and on this platform it is possible to use proprietary devices such as DualSense and PlayStation VR 2, while AAA developers are increasingly inclined to publish their titles on as many platforms as available, even creating of conversions for mobile devices. Despite this, Cerny thinks that consoles will continue to be a staple of the market in the future, also thanks to their advantageous price.
Will a PC ever be cheaper than a console?
To explain it, he took as an example a video published a few months ago by the famous YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips, where they tried to “killing” the PS5 by creating a $500 PC setup able to match and exceed the performance of the console, with the experiment being successful, but only by purchasing used components.
“They had to get a used motherboard to do that,” Cerny said. “It was the only way to build a PC equivalent to the PS5 at the price of the PS5. And if you have to use used parts… PS5 can be found on eBay for $300 or so.”
“I believe that if we continue to create this beautiful package, the future of consoles will be quite rosy“.
In the same interview, Cerny talked about how in this generation many more players prefer games with high framerate, creating an important gap compared to previous consoles.
