Around 200 people demanded this Monday (5) the dismantling of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in front of its headquarters in Jerusalem.
Protesters called for the organization's end, chanting slogans, according to local press reports, in reference to Israeli accusations that at least 12 members of the agency were involved in the October 7 terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas.
This Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of an independent panel to investigate the work of UNRWA, led by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, who is expected to present a preliminary report in March.
Israel's Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, congratulated the UN this Monday on the social network X (formerly Twitter) for the creation of the investigative committee, describing it as imperative for the truth to come to light.
“We will present all the evidence that highlights UNRWA's links to terrorism and its harmful effects on regional stability,” Katz announced.
Israel's accusations have caused 18 countries – including the United States, Japan, Germany and France – to suspend contributions to the agency, which has said it will run out of funds by the end of the month.
The assessment announced this Monday will be carried out simultaneously with another investigation by the UN department of internal affairs, which, according to Guterres, could produce results within two or three weeks. (With EFE Agency)
