Nicaragua.- The priest José Leonardo “U” was sentenced this weekend to 49 years in prison for sexually abusing a minor under 14 years of age old when he was a parish priest in the church Perpetual Help of Boaco, about 90 kilometers north of Managua, Nicaragua.
The sentence was handed down by Judge Edén Aguilar Castro, in the Third Specialized Court for Violence against Women in Managua.
The defendant was given two sentences, the first ofe 24 years in prison for two cases of abuse and 25 years for rape However, the priest is expected to serve only 30 years in prison because it is the maximum sentence established by law, except for more serious crimes that are given life imprisonment.
José Leonardo was arrested last July, after the mother of the 14-year-old victim accused him of committing sexual abuse against her daughter.
For its part, the Diocese of Granada issued a statement in which it regretted what had happened, as well as the imprisonment of its parish priest, in which it also asked its faithful to pray for the imprisoned priests.
With the case of priest José Leonardo, there are already two religious imprisoned during the current administration of Daniel Ortega, after the first, Father Manuel García from the city of Nandaime, was sentenced in June to two years in prison for allegedly assaulting a woman, who later recanted.
