In Russia, in 2022, prices for wood processing products have changed. The cost of goods produced by the timber industry, mainly cardboard and plywood, decreased slightly at the end of 2021 and began to rise again at the beginning of 2022. About this informs “Kommersant”.
The reasons in the market are considered to be high demand after the pandemic and an increase in the cost of transportation and raw materials. There is an increase in demand for packaging due to the rise of online commerce, which provoked a rise in the price of paper and cardboard.

The peak of the cost of most products of the timber industry complex occurred at the end of the third quarter of 2021, and at the end of the year, the cost increased by 50-60 percent. An important factor that influenced the market, experts call the shortage of raw materials faced by large producers.
In addition, prices were impacted by increased spending on chemicals and logistics. Over the past year, during a period of high prices, there could have been pent-up demand, which will be realized in 2022. The timber industry expects the market to cool down only by the end of the year.
On January 2, it became known that increased export rates for certain types of sawn timber came into force in Russia, which should allow limiting the export of unprocessed timber under the guise of sawn timber. The Russian government has previously expanded restrictions on the export of timber: from January 2 to December 31, 2022, there will be increased export rates for certain types of timber with a moisture content of more than 22 percent and a thickness and width of more than 10 centimeters. The Ministry of Industry and Trade explained that this was done “to increase the volume of exports of products with high added value, as well as to prevent the flow of one commodity group into another.”
